Did I over react?

Well, I probably did yesterday, but that's not what I'm speaking of - LOL. So we all know the frame of mind that I was in yesterday. If you dont, see the genie post - ha! I decided to pack up Dawson yesterday afternoon to go look at campers and check out the sales at Old Navy - we both clearly needed to get out of the house and shopping just cheers me up!

Camper shopping was great. I've been looking at a camper on ebay from a dealership in Michigan. I found the exact same model in Manassas (but much more expensive) so I was able to physically see it and walk around in it. I now love it even more. It is so perfectly suited for us!! So today we're going to a camping show with two other couples to see what's out there before making a final decison - yay! My expedition will be paid off in a few months so Jeff gave me the option of getting a new car or a new camper - camper it is! Besides, although it's up there in miles, there's nothing wrong with my car. For those that have seen our Beverly Hillbillies Camper on wheels you totally understand =). Not to mention the fact that there was a little water damage and Dawson and I have alot of allergies and get sick almost every time we go camping. We practically live in our camper in the summer. OH I'm so excited, I hope this all pans out!!!!!

So then, on to Old Navy we go. We pull in a parking spot and a guy in a little red sports car flies into the spot beside us and get's out in an obvious hurry and goes into Old Navy - you'll see later why this is important.

D and I go in and shop for a while (we were looking through sale stuff so we might have been in there 30/40 minutes). We came out of Old Navy and I look into the mini van beside me (where the red sports car had been) and there are two small children in there ALL ALONE! They looked to be about 2 or 3 and a baby. Now Manassas isn't awful with crime, but it happens more often than where we live. Now mind you, for those that don't live here, Old Navy is in a big shopping center where you have to go across a little "road" to the parking lot so this isn't DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF the store.

I wanted to get home and beat the worst of the traffic so badly but I just couldn't in good conscience leave those kids alone. So, I sat there and sat there and sat there for probably 20 minutes. Also for a split second I thought "Wouldn't it be awful if this was like a 20/20 setup to see how people handled the situation and I just looked over and drove away - LOL" Not really, but I did giggle at the thought.

Now remember the guy in the sports car appeared to be a big hurry. He was a 20 something guy and appeared rushed so I'm guessing that he wasn't in there long. Also remember that I was in there 30/40 minutes. So, how long HAVE these kids been sitting in the car all alone? The car wasn't running, it's wasn't freezing but it was 46 degrees outside. I was just getting more angry by the minute and continued to sit there.

My dad was coming by to visit Dawson so I had to go. What do you do when you don't know how to handle a situation like this? I called mom - LOL. I asked her if I was overreacting and asked if I should call the police. I then called 911 and said "I may be totally reacting but it seemed important enough to me to at least call", and then I told her the story. The operated thanked me for calling, sent a policeman and asked that I stayed there until he got there. She said that what this mom did was against the law and she was glad that I called. At that point I start to feel a little bad for the mom because I don't know what her story is or why she did it (I really do try to see the good in everyone). I'm hoping that this scares her enough that she won't do it anymore, but not sure that I want her to get in major trouble.

She came out with 3 large handled paper shopping bags so clearly she had been in there for quite some time. By this time I had moved across the lot a little bit (being the chicken that I am - ha). She got in and pulled out of the spot before the police arrived. I had to leave too so I followed her out. The dispatcher had me tell her where she was going but then I had to turn a different direction. I had given them her tag number and car description already and she said there was a policeman in route and would be able to find her one way or another tracking her by the tag number.

Some of you may think that leaving your kids in the car isn't a big deal but my gut told me that just wasn't right and I knew that was something that I wouldn't do. In the time she was in there anything could have happened to those kids. There were NO sale items in the front of the store so she couldn't have even been looking at her vehicle to see if someone had broken the glass and taken them. So, feel free to comment if you want to. I'd love to know opinions both in agreement or disagreement. I'm still a little uneasy about the whole thing but hope that I did the right thing.

Yes, I think you did the right thing also. Believe me, it would be much easier to run errands without a 22lb. baby attached to my hip but it is not worth it and I couldn't bare the thought of him all alone - she shouldn't either. It seems harmless at times but it just isn't. You did the right thing.

totaly the right thing , just imagine if you had left and something had happened . Shes the mother shes responsible. I hope she got a warning and that will be enough to stop her doing it again.

You totally did the right thing! I think I would have done the same. You never know what crazies lurk in a big parking lot like that!
